Havnsø is a small ferry berth by the north-western coast of Seeland.
Havnsø is situated in the bay Nekselø Bugt and has always been an important ferry berth. Havnsø belongs to the area of Odsherred, which is famous for its unique light. As the holiday houses of this area are often the permanent homes of the owners who vacate their houses in the summer, the region still appears typically Danish. You can swim, enjoy nature and experience the culture and sights of the area here. It is possible to buy groceries in the area, and the nearest larger town is Kalundborg (22 km), which offers an interesting harbour environment, a quarter from the Middle Ages with narrow alleys and well-preserved, half-timbered houses, Denmark's only church with 5 spires, many exhibitions and a cosy town centre with restaurants and shops.
Beach
The sandy beach of Havnsø, which belongs to the area of Vesterlyng, is very suitable for children and has the Blue Flag. Windsurfers will find good conditions here as well. In the northern part of Ordrup (16 km) another sandy beach is available. This beach is also very suitable for both children and surfers. Here you will find a raised beach with tables and benches as well as a ramp leading down towards the water. The ramp enables you to bring a wheelchair, a pushchair etc to the beach.
Nature
The area of Vesterlyngen near Havnsø is Seeland's largest moor landscape with meadows, small lakes, heather and rare vegetation. The area is a conservation area. The headland of Ordrup Næs is a partly preserved nature area with hardwood trees and pine trees. From the tip of the tongue you can observe both porpoises and seals, if you are in luck (16 km).
Activities
Anglers will find good opportunities all along the shores of western Seeland, in the Put & Take fishponds of the area or on the sea, on board a fishing vessel, which sails out from both Havnsø and Sjællands Odde. If you wish to play golf, the 18-hole course of Kalundborg Golf Klub is a good option. If you wish to go horseback riding, it is possible to rent riding horses in many places in the area. On the headland of Ordrup Næs you can follow a path, which leads you all the way around in the scenic area. Because of the good wind conditions on the headland, it is also very popular to fly with kites here. The area is also of interest for divers, who can search for finds from an old stone age settlement about 50 metres offshore by Ordrup Næs.
Attractions
The mill Havnsø Mølle is a Dutch mill from the year 1822. Enjoy the atmosphere in the harbour of Havnsø, where you can buy fresh fish, or go with the ferry to the traffic-free island Nekselø, which offers a scenic and interesting landscape, a rich animal life and great views, or to the island Sejerø, which has Denmark's mildest climate, a hilly landscape, many small bathing beaches as well as many passage graves and a monolith. The castle Dragsholm Slot is Denmark's oldest castle. The primeval fortress from the early mediaeval times has a dungeon and offers many ghost stories. A scenic palace garden belongs to the castle (10 km).
