The quiet holiday area Amstrup by the Horsens Fjord is an ideal holiday destination for families with children.
The village of Amstrup is situated on the north side of the Horsens Fjord, right opposite Alrø island , which is connected with the mainland, 10 km from Odder and 24 km from Horsens. Amstrup is centrally located with regard to sights, larger towns, as well as lovely forests and nature areas. In Amstrup you will find peace, quiet and scenic surroundings. It is possible to buy groceries in the area, but if you wish to choose from a larger selection, you can visit Odder or Horsens.
Beach
You can swim in the fjord by Amstrup. Furthermore, this place is suitable for windsurfers. If you wish to swim in the Kattegat you can visit the beaches of Saksild or Rude, about 17 km from Amstrup. Here you will find some of the best bathing beaches of the Jutland eastern coast. The wide and sandy beaches are suitable for children, offer a bathing jetty and invite walks as well as beach activities.
Nature
The preserved area Sondrup Bakker, close to Amstrup, is a nature area with alternating open areas and thick forest. Here you will find a network of marked walking paths. The island of Alrø is connected with the mainland through a 1 km long dam. The island has a quite unique bird life, which can be observed from a gazebo. The forest of Marselisborgskovene is situated on the southern outskirts of Århus, a very scenic area with many bicycle and walking paths. Here you can also get close to animals, for example roe deer and wild boar (within an enclosed area).
Activities
A number of good golf courses are available in eastern Jutland. The closest one is the course of Odder Golfklub, but the scenic courses in Århus and Skanderborg are within reach as well. Anglers will find good fishing opportunities along the fjord as well as by Egehoved, the southernmost point on the island of Alrø. The many walking paths in the nature areas and the forests by Amstrup enable you to enjoy the scenic nature at close range.
Attractions
The district is rich in historic sights, and you can experience churches and ruins of churches, a long house with stone cists, monuments and ruins from the viking age. The old mill Gylling Mølle today appears fully restored and functional, and flour is being milled here (5 km). Den Økologiske Have (the ecological garden) by Odder is the largest ecological garden in Scandinavia. Get inspired in the large park with theme gardens, animals, grain and flower fields (10 km). The history of the district can be seen at the regional museum Odder Egnsmuseum. Here you can experience the preserved water and steam mill Odder Vand- og Dampmølle, a farmhouse room from the 18th century and many interesting exhibitions (10 km).
Discoveries
From Hov, 11 km north of Alken, the ferry sails daily to the islands Tunø and Samsø. Tunø has a scenic and varying nature, a mild climate and a cosy, evocative village. Samsø offers a unique nature, peace, quiet, idyll and many leisure activities.
Visit Horsens, which was nominated town of the year in 2002. Horsens is alaways worth a visit with its scenic location, the many cultural offers, the widest pedestrian street in northern Europe, the fjord, the industrial museum Danmarks Industrimuseum, Horsens Museum and the cosy atmosphere (24 km).
Moesgård Museum has been established on the manor house Moesgård and contains archaeological collections from both Denmark and the Persian Gulf (27 km).
Visit Århus, the capital of Jutland, with the open-air museum Den Gamle By, the music house, the museums, the small and intimate alleys of the Latin Quarter and the lively atmosphere by the stream Vadestedet (33 km).
